John Wells
Photographed for You Magazine 14th April 1983
Satirist who started his career writing for ‘That was the week that was’. When I photographed him at home in Kensington he was playing Margaret Thatcher’s husband in ‘Anyone for Dennis’ at the Whitehall Theatre.
It was our idea to photograph him with a bottle of Perrier water in contrast to Dennis Thatcher’s reputation for a liking of the harder stuff. This was an early commission from Jayne Gould the Art director at ‘You’ magazine who showed a great deal more confidence in me than I did in myself at the time!
Julian Lloyd Webber
Photographed for You magazine 19th August 1986
British Classical Cellist and brother of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Julie Andrews
Photographed March 5th 1987.
A surreal experience meeting and photographing someone you first saw at the pictures (cinema) in the film Mary Poppins as a five year old. A very beautiful and charming woman with a fabulous voice I could have listened to all day - a photographers dream! I photographed her at The Dorchester hotel London for The Sunday Express.
Dame June Whitfield
Personal shot photographed November 28th 2008
This picture of the absolutely brilliant June Whitfield was taken at her home in Wimbledon. Everyone remembers her as the nurse in Hancock’s blood donor sketch and ‘Absolutely fabulous’ but there was also television and radio work with Frankie Howerd, Terry Scott, Jimmy Edwards, Benny Hill, Dick Emery and Roy Hudd.
While I was at the house June asked if I could hang a picture on the wall above her sofa. As I was doing it but the thought did occur to me that if it fell off the wall while she was sitting having a cup of tea the newspaper headlines the next day might be .…“ National treasure June Whitfield, victim of bodged DIY job!”
Kenny Everett
Photographed 22nd March 1984
One of the first people I knew to have a CD player back in the day and when we arrived at his flat he insisted on demonstrating how indestructible the discs were by covering one in last night’s curry takeaway and then washing it under the tap!.... “All done in the best possible taste” Photographed for ‘Woman’ magazine.

Larry Adler, Harmonica player
Photographed Covent garden studio London October 1984
This was a double exposure on a 6x7 medium format camera in the studio (the days before ‘Photoshop’) and was created by having two set ups in the studio that Larry Adler could walk between and I would just take the film back off the camera and expose between one and the other. Charming man, and this photograph was taken for a feature on ’people and their portraits’. He had music written for him by Vaughan Williams, played Jazz and blues and played on pop songs with Elton John, Kate Bush, Sting, Carly Simon and Elvis Costello.
He was also Oscar nominated for his playing on the soundtrack of the film ‘Genevieve’.

Leonard 'Nipper' Read
Photographed 20th September 1984
Chief Superintendent Leonard Read & his team were responsible for bringing the notorious East End criminals the Kray twins to justice in the 1960’s. I photographed him in his role as head of security at The National Portrait gallery in London for The Mail on Sunday Magazine.
This picture is held in The National Portrait Gallery Archives.
Leonard Rossiter
Photographed May 30th 1980
This is one of my very first test shots taken at The Theatre Royal Haymarket. In my assisting days I would go around theatres knocking on the stage doors after work to try and photograph actors who I liked to put in my portfolio (or book). I could then show the photographs to magazine Art directors in the hope of getting commissioned. Leonard Rossiter was really receptive and just welcomed me in without any questions but he also had a definite way that he was going to look for the camera with no variations which was quite intimidating.
He starred in films and TV such as Billy Liar, Britannia Hospital, Barry Lyndon, A kind of Loving, Oliver, The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, Rising Damp and did a series of very funny commercials with Joan Collins for Cinzano.
Malcom Mclaren
Photographed March 15th 1989
This was the second time photographed the ex Sex Pistols manager. A man with a great sense of humour who didn’t seem to take himself too seriously. This photograph was taken at The Westbury Hotel London for the short lived ‘Options’ magazine in the UK.
Malcom Mclaren
Photographed June 29th 1986
This was the first time I photographed Malcom Mclaren which was at The Portobello hotel in London for The Sunday Express. After the Sex Pistols he did some great work including merging opera with disco for his version of Madam Butterfly. We had about half an hour to work out where to do the picture, set up the lighting and actually do the shot – lucky for me he was a breeze to photograph. I loved his socks and I can’t think of anyone else who could have carried this outfit off.

Margaret Drabble
Photographed February 25th 1987.
I’d never heard of her at the time or any of the books she’d written, and I think as a result got the frosty expression from her that you see in the picture (and I can’t say I blame her!). Photographed at home in Hampstead London for ‘The Illustrated London News’.

Michael Winner
Photographed at his home in Kensington London 23rd November 1984.
Not the jolliest person I’ve met and someone who clearly didn’t want to be photographed and probably wouldn’t have done if he hadn’t been promoting either a book or a film of his!
Director of films including Hannibal Brooks, Lawman, I’ll never forget what’s ‘is name and the Death Wish series.
Mike Batt
Photographed 23rd December 1984
Musician, music producer and probably most famous for writing ‘The Wombles’ television show music. He also wrote ‘Bright Eyes’ for the animated film ‘Watership Down’ which was sung by Art Garfunkel.
A very easy and likeable person to photograph who didn’t hassle me for time.
Mike McCartney (Mike Mac)
Photographed August 17th 1986
Photographed at his home on The Wirral Liverpool. A photographer himself (look at his early shots of The Beatles) - he was really easy to photograph. This picture was done with obvious reference to this and his previous music career with The Scaffold. I think the house once belonged to his dad as bought by his brother when he hit the big time (there is quite a lot of reference to it in Hunter Davies’s biography of The Fab Four).

Richard Young & Alan Davidson
Photographed for the cover of ‘You’ magazine at Holborn studios London 21st September 1984
The two best known and respected British ‘Press’ Photographers of the time. There was so much rivalry between them that they didn’t talk to each other throughout the session which made for a very interesting shoot. Richard Young got his big break working for David Bailey’s ‘Ritz’ newspaper and they have both photographed everybody who’s anybody and anybody who’s everybody.
Ron and Jo Wood
Photographed March 7th 1987
Knocking on his door at 11.00am on a Saturday morning I was greeted by Ronnie holding a pint glass of Southern comfort and lemonade – Rock and Roll! I spent all day there with his wife and family who were all very charming and hospitable. Photograph was taken at home in Wimbledon for The Mail on Sunday. This picture was actually copied by the cartoonist Michael Heath in ‘Private Eye’ I’m proud to say.
This photograph is held in The National Portrait Gallery Archives.

Photographed at Eden recording studios in Chiswick London February 24th 1987
This picture was taken to publicise his new singing career and published in The Mail on Sunday magazine.
Rupert Graves
Photographed February 3rd 1988
Brilliant actor who is well known for roles in ‘Room with a View’, ‘Maurice’ and ‘The Madness of King George’. He was great fun to photograph and picked up the knife without prompting and struck a pose (it was a prop for another job I was doing). Photographed for the Sunday Express magazine.
Sade
Photographed on location in Harringay North London 9th July 1984
About three months later the band came to my flat in Battersea and my young brother was staying with me. He couldn’t believe it when he opened the door to Sade who signed a polaroid picture to him…. ‘To David smooth operator Lyne.’
Sade
Photographed July 9th 1984
Studio session for You magazine. This was the second day I spent photographing her as the magazines at the time were just beginning to latch on to this hot new talent and wanted to make the most of it.
I didn’t enjoy this session so much as I had a pain in the arse prima donna makeup artist to contend with. It’s always a better result when it’s just you and the person being photographed but all too often when photographing the ‘stars’ you were surrounded by a sycophantic entourage, not that I’m bitter you understand!
I don’t think the fur is real.

Stewart Copeland
Photographed 14th June 1983.
Drummer with rock band The Police, Taken at Kirtlington Polo ground Oxfordshire England. One of the best days I’ve spent photographing anyone, not least because I was a fan of the band at the time but also because he is just such a genuine bloke.
When I photographed him the band had just split up and Stewart suggested putting Sting’s phone number up in the background with the numbers you can see on the floor but got cold feet at the last minute.
